Lightning current arresters - SPD type 1 and SPD type 1 and 2

A type 1 SPD or also a lightning arrester reduces the voltage and limits the energy of a surge wave caused by a direct or indirect lightning strike. It is used as the first stage - rough protection - in a 3- stage surge protection concept. The main protective element of the lightning arrester is the spark gap (lightning arrester). The design is usually multi-part and consists of a base and replaceable one- way modules with optical status indication. The lightning arrester is installed as close as possible to the interface between the protected and unprotected environment, i.e. at the entrance of the supply cable to the building, usually in the junction boxes or the main meter cabinet.
